Wow I forgot how fast they grow. I always had them in my garden when I lived in Zimbabwe years ago but in Johannesburg I didn't have much luck.

Jan--Pawpaws would do fine in southern IL, but up by Chicago, the winters are probably too harsh. The pawpaws pictured here are not the same plant that is called pawpaw in the US, though. Totally different leaves.
In regard to your comment Heather `Paw Paw' means `big melon' and are the fruit of the Papaya tree. There is another plant call pawpaw which unrelated to this species.
