Developer Gifts Gold Coast Community Garden

The Gold Coast Beach Front now boasts an exciting new community garden at 40 Old Burleigh Rd.

Gifted from a developer for a period of 2 years it will revert to him as his project nears completion.

Due to previous commitments I arrived after all the wonderful work had been done by Gold Coast Permaculture and Community Garden members but was still in time to take photos of this great project and its progress.

It had been a busy morning putting down weed mat and gravel for paths and bringing the raised beds to life with wet newspaper, cardboard, and organic mulch.

Justin worked on creating a compost heap for the garden while others watered the new beds.

Greg Plevey from Wormtec sprayed valuable organic nutrients on the new beds to enrich the soil.

Here he is with his daughter Krystal and a visitor direct from the Gold Coast Surf.

Permaculture Gold Coast contributed many plants including cassava, lemon grass and comfrey while others brought along plants and seedlings including tomatoes, ceylon spinach, Chinese Vegetables, sweet potatoes and pumpkins.

Everyone was busy planting when I arrived.

Some of the residents of the local apartments also turned up and planted seedlings, or just came to say hi.

What a great team, and wow what an enormous rain water tank.

This will mean ongoing water during hot, dry Gold Coast Days.

What an inspiration to see everyone working together in the heart of Surfers Paradise to grow real, organic food.

What a different Gold Coast from the one I painted in the nineties, but I so like what is now happening with people working together to create food security for today's world.
