Varsity Lakes Community Garden Smoking Ceremony

Varsity Lakes Community Garden was today the scene of a Smoking Ceremony put on by the land's original peoples.

Here two magnificent men stand in front of the mural created by the very special local elder here smiling at the camera.

A special tea and cake were provided using the `Lemon Myrtle' tree.

The recipe for the so delicious cake is given below.

The smoking ceremony took place before a large and receptive audience.

The ceremony is seen as a cleansing, a leaving behind of the old and the beginning of the new.

It was powerful and lively to watch.

Then some speeches outlining how  local plants and their uses will be introduced to the garden.

This was followed by a planting of our very own lemon myrtle tree.

All joined in adding a load of soil to the tree's new home beginning with the local elders, and ending with a young smiling tree planter.
